This is a reliable work-horse rum that can fill many roles, but it's almost the same price as the 8 year and I think the 8 year is a much better rum. ED 5 is sippable neat or on the rocks but works best in a cocktail imho. There's no real funk to speak of, but it's sweet and pleasant.
I had heard very good things about el Dorado rum in the past, but I didnt have the budget at the time to purchase one of the more aged rums, so I gave a try to the 5 year. At first I was rather disappointed in it but as I continued to drink it, I began to find its niche in my small but growing collection. It makes an excellent mixer for painkillers and other tiki drinks, and with a little ice I can drink it straight if I don't feel like drinking one of my more expensive bottles. All in all it wasnt what I was expecting, but it did good when I found the perfect spot for it.
Lovey color. Nose has vanilla and toffee. Nice toffee start to the taste, followed by vanilla and a slight sweetness. Not a flavorful finish. Overall, a very nice intro to the El Dorado family. Looking forward to trying the older versions!
I can harly tell a difference and again mix with it and you'll love this and it's price point!!!!
I was absolutely enamored with the 12yr El Dorado, and recently found this one on sale at a local store. I try to make it a point to taste as many as I can, and was not disappointed in this one.
While not as good as the 12 yr, I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and quality of this 5 yr. It was smoother than many other young rums, and enjoyable both neat and mixed. I preferred it mixed for sure, but the flavor was enjoyable without being too complex.
In the mid $20 CAD range, this is a winner.
ED 5years old is a full body tasty (and sweet) Demerara mixer. Would not recomend it as a sipper. Deep amber colour, rich vanila and toffee flavor. Best mixed with bitter fruit juices insteed of the classic coke. Must have in the cabinet for tasty cocktails
I like sweet rums and I cannot lie so the El Dorado line is one of my favorites. This is my go-to rum for mixing drinks that call for a blended aged rum, but not quite a sipper and I love it for hot-buttered rum. It isn't harsh or funky at all and gives quiet strength to cocktails that lean to the sweeter side (not like stupid sweet boat drinks and pina coladas, but the sweeter tiki style drink.) of the tiki spectrum. It isn't really a 10 but it is so inexpensive, it is the best value for mixers I have found.
A good priced rum with a better flavour than your run of the mill national brands. Not as complex a flavour as the aged El Dorado rums.
It has a sweet almost fruity taste. .
"It’s tasty and fruity. There’s an overall taste a bit like the smell of floral gums."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

Personally I do NOT care for this. Its intial smell reminded me of a glue or paint thinner. After a sip and a smell again, it smelled sweet but its taste still had no improvement.
