Just curious, what do you all think of the name change, Plantation -> Planteray?? I did run into a customer at a TWM last year in the rum aisle, and we got to talking. They were a bit surprised to find Plantation named as such given rum's historic background.

I certainly understand the desire to change the name, just don't know how much I care for Planteray. Doubt I could come up with something "better"...but what do you all think, and what other names do you think could have been good?

It doesn't matter what name they use. I will continue to boycott them due to their false marketing such as calling something a Barbados rum even though it has been changed in France. A company that opposes a GI Barbados and tries to change GI Jamaica to be able to handle Jamaican rum the same way they handle Barbadian rum should not be supported in my opinion.

Honestly, when first reading I thought it was something the death star would shoot... maybe instead of a world destroyer, it would cover a world with plants :)

Reminds me too much of Tanqueray. Or a name that they would have come up with on Seinfeld to try and sound fancy. "No it's plant-er-aaaay, Jerry"

Ha!!! I miss Seinfeld..., Jerry would definitely pronounce it was a French accent :)

Not an issue necessarily, but it is a note of historic interest I think. I've now heard from those on both sides - that applaud the effort given the connotation of the word Plantation, and that also think is is totally unnecessary.

Not sure that I like the new name, still have yet to see a bottle with the change. I wonder if the Plantation bottles will become some kind of collectible (in the distant future) as a result?

I thought MF brought out the brand name Kaniche to replace new offerings versus Plantation.

Since all that I still buy from them is their OFTD and Artisinal 3-Star, I really don't care about the new name being influenced by too many people with thin skin. However, the new name is even worse and Andy nailed it!!! A much better and more appropriate name should have been Planted Cane.

Very few of their limited release rums have impressed me. But if I wound up liking some like their XO Guatemala, it was good luck finding them again. Their OFTD special blend is always in my rum cabinet and it works great as throat cleaner when my throat itches from possible exposure to COVID-19. In January of 2022, it actually prevented my symptoms from exceeding two days. I know for a fact where I caught it from because that doctor's office nurse told me that their whole office got the Omicron version. No other overproof rum tastes this good and the panel that created this blend at one of the Tales Of The Cocktail events really did a great job. The original meaning of OFTD is actually the best description!

When I first joined on this site more than six years ago, I was really impressed with their overly sweetened XO 20th Anniversary Rum. That one has now fallen to my rating of 5 to never be purchased again. When I was a newbie on here, I was quite impressed with all of their rums being finished in cognac casks. Now that I know much more about rums, all I can say for finishing rums in cognac casks is "Why oh why?!!!!!". The only good thing about this is that it removes a lot of the bourbon cask notes that I absolutely hate.

So far I've only tried Plantation Original Dark Double Aged and really like it.  I want to try OFTD, but can't find it near me.  Will probably try the Xymaca and the 5-yr aged just because the Dark is tasty.

I'm wondering if they're just dragging their feet on the name change until people forget about it.

OFTD is excellent. Xamayca isn't bad. I do actually like the 5-year Barbados. The XO Barbados is a total waste of monet in my opinion, as is the 3-Star - I know that generally cuts against the grain on both counts, but the XO is just flat with no depth or real character (less expensive Mount Gay rums are better) and the 3-Star leaves a funky after-taste that I don't care for.

I t does seem like they are dragging their feet a bit, website still says Plantation and all. I'm sure there is a plan for the rollout. I wonder how much stockpile there is of Plantation product though that needs to be offloaded?

Didn't see it on the Plantation website, but apparently the first one to bear the Planteray name will be (is) the Cut & Dry Coconut rum, now available. Maybe it has been available for a while? Don't have it in my locale yet, not that I've seen anyway. But it's got a few reviews here already.

So what is the Kaniche named rums released last year from the parent company Masion Ferrand? I thought that was the name change.  I suppose the old rums will retain the old name?

I think that is different (available only in Barbados, or at least according to the text...).

Check it out:

Kaniche has been around for a while actually. The Fiji is new, but wondering how close it is to Plantation Fiji, I haven't tried it. The Perfeccion is actually pretty good (Panama).
