I am starting my rum journey right now (2024). I am through my first few bottles and just got a few other ones that are mostly closed. 

Given my inexperience with rum I will explain what my palate is used too. 

I am not so big on describing tasting notes. That said, I consider myself quite advanced in my coffee drinking hobby so I would hope that my palate is rather developed.

Related to alcohol I went through a couple of years enjoying Scottish whiskey. Nothing too fancy, everything in the 40-60€ range. 

What I am trying to say is I know what I like when I drink it and I am used to alcohol burn. 

I didn’t love rum on first sight. I can’t remember what it was, but it was stereotypical and too sweet. That turned to the opposite. I enjoy every sip and the journey.
