Bacardi 1873 Ron Solera is a golden rum aged up to three years in charred oak barrels. As the name suggests, the Solera system is used to produce this rum, which mixes new batches of rum with older batches each year.
"1873" represents the year of the Virginius Affair, the name of a captured American ship that resulted in a remarkable international diplomacy for peace between the US and Spain during the Ten Years' War.

At 13-20$, the Ron Solera poises as a fancy and limited edition beverage. However, it seems as though most of the funding went into the packaging (glimmery box) and lettering on the bottle instead of the rum.
It leans towards "sharp" and honestly 'has a wild bite to it' is about the best way I can put it into words. I recommend flor de cana 5 year (~$19) for a far better mixing rum
Es de los rones de bacardi que se fabrican en México por lo que es todo un clásico. Es de cuerpo muy ligero y color pálido pera su añejamiento pero tiene fuerte aroma y sabores complejos. Aún es muy alcohólico por lo que es mejor mezclarlo.
How can this cost so much? First, it is a Solera system rum. This is a process by which they can say it has much older better aged rum in the bottle because they combine different aged rums. This aged rum can be as little as 1% of the bottle. Second it is remarkably thin and lifeless. It tastes very young. There is no care involved in producing this rum. No complexity and absolutely zero balance. Your taste buds get hammered by the alcohol punch the minute it hits your lips. It gets worse the rest of the way. It packs a punch but offers no pleasure. The finish is hot and short. This is terrible!
I was surprised when I first bought a bottle of this rum for around 20$/15€ in Mexico and could actually drink it neat and enjoy it. Was never a big fan of Barcadi, but this one is surprisingly good. If you like rums like Zacapa 23, this is a cheaper and not far off alternative (super smooth).
Had this rum in a Mexican resort. It lost out to Flora d Cana and Appleton (low ends)but was ok. It does have a dark molasses taste, with oak pronounced. This is a mixer. Not a sipper, unless you’ve already had too much and want to cleanse yourself. There are better, and there are worse. Hmmm, maybe put this in a Pina-Colada…I’m off to try.
