So, after this being recommended to me I figured, hell let's go there. I noticed after it breaths a while it becomes more desirable. You can tell there's much tweaking going on which is very noble! Although I'm not so convinced with the proof rating. It stated 138 but I figure more like 100 proof. Anybody actually test it's proof? Thanks to Paul B. this one is now on my shelf because it has that likeability about it. It seems to get better and better every day! Cheers!
Nose: As expected, it comes in really hot. After giving it some time in the glass, more nuances are clearer: top notes of overripe saba bananas, banoffee pudding, and cherry stalks. Alongside more of the ethanol come hints of cacao nibs, dried plums, and burnt lemongrass. After bringing the ABV down to 50-55%, there's a steady yet rich parade of toffee, sesame oil, caramelized bananas, and cinnamon. There's also a refreshing sweetness coming in, alongside light-roast coffee, blueberry spread, and a kind of spice that I can't put my finger on - maybe turmeric?
Palate: Charred wood, light olive oil, and chocolate glaze edge out the muddle of flavors that follow due to the ethanol content. WIth water, the flavors are much more enjoyable. Blueberries, vanilla, still some bananas (grilled, this time), and a quiet hit of shaved coconut. The Jamaican funk is the most interesting part in its character.
Finish: Bitter oak and fades away quickly.
Funky, spicy, and incredibly smooth, and that for 69% alcohol. Great for mixing and surprisingly easy for sipping!
Bang, this is some real deal. It has some spices and kick to it, but the taste of old leather and old oak is sooo long, the aftertaste is so nice, I don't want to sip again.
This rum is my siren call. Strong, sweet, and packs a punch
69% is spicy and still able to taste the flavour in the rum. Pretty good stuff
It’s very intense, almost sickly sweet.
"It’s a sweet yet almost bitter, molasses heavy nose."
Try to get a well lit shot from the front of the rum label

OFTD is surprisingly versatile for an overproof rum. Definitely “hot” neat, but mellowed by complex caramel and molasses notes, with a hint of overripe banana. A large cube cuts the heat to be more in line with lower proof peers. OFTD is an excellent choice in a variety of cocktails, especially those in the tiki family - it’s bold enough to stand out, but not so much that it would bully other ingredients and adds a welcome depth other dark rums miss. A real treasure, especially for the price point.
