This 8 year works fine as a base for many tiki cocktails, but if you have the money I would go for their next level up.
Wife and I honeymooned in Jamaica so I thought I’d snag i nice bottle to bring back. Definitely strong when compared to others. Very earthy warm taste.
On the nose I can smell banana, coconut, caramel, wood and elderberry flower. The taste profile is smooth, it has strong Jamaica sweet overripe banana profile, with undertones of white oak and leather, it ends in a spicy, slightly bitter aftertaste, all pleasant. I noticed the change of the label to a simple one, with just big eight instead of the picture, not sure if I am rating the same stuff as my predecessors here. Overall, I am very pleased with this rum, it is recognizably Jamaica, but not over the top, well made, without additives, which I like a lot. For some reason I can can get it only for the same price as Appleton 12y, which does not make much sense to me.
Nice flavour easy to drink on ice. One of my favourite Appleton rhum.
A little bolder, a little more fiery, a little less well composed than Appleton's 12 year bottle. Something tangier or fruitier about this drink compared its older cousin. An almost bilious note under-running the flavor... but oddly not in an entirely unpleasant way.
Its sparkiness reminds me a bit of Mount Gay, actually. Overall, not bad, but around these parts this runs at the same price point as the 12 year, to which it doesn't compare favorably.
Ça goute la république, comme tous les autres Appleton. Un peu moins boisé que le 12 ans. Un peu épicé et poivré
Surprisingly spicy on the tongue. Strong notes of black pepper and oaked heat.
"Has a lovely smooth entry which quickly heats up. The initial notes of pineapple and dark almost to ripe banana give way to spicy heat. The flavours linger and coat the taste buds with hot spice."

This is a lovely drop. Its typical Appleton (12 is superior) with a smooth more mellow and subdued flavour that is enjoyable and easy to drink either straight or mixed. I would easily recommend this but personally prefer Mt Gay's offerings.
