Appleton Estate 12-Year Rum is a blend of several rums aged between 12 and 18 years in American oak barrels after being distilled using small-batch copper pot stills.
The rum is produced on the Appleton Estate, which sits in the Nassau Valley in Jamaica. The estate’s origins date back as far as 1655 when the English overthrew the Spanish to rule the island and Frances Dickinson, grandfather of the distillery’s founders, received the land as a reward for his role in the overthrow.

Impressed me with it's rich dark red-brown colour in the first place.
Then it was the taste and aromas that totally surprised me!
Burned caramel, oak and spices are dominant combined in very well balance with a discreet scent of tobacco laying in the background.
All well blended though "complex character" is not the first thing one would think of this Rum.
Very descend, a real value for money after all!
My first tasting of this a few years ago was kind of disappointing after reading reviews, but it's been growing on me since. I was thinking to give it a 7, but pulled it out again for this "review", and I think it'll have to be an 8. It's quite unique compared to all other rums I keep around.
Let me start by saying that I like sweet rums. So this just isn't my cup of tea (rum) as it's not sweet at all. Still I try to keep an open mind want to taste all kinds of rum. With this one there's some strange bitter (leathery?) taste to it that I don't like much. And it muffles all other tastes. In the mix with coke zero it's much better, but that's a waste. I'll keep trying to drink it neat until it's empty. Might be I start to respect it a bit more.....
Very nice and smooth. Smoky molassas, ripe banana, light caramel with an oaky vanilla spice. I get some toffee and a little butterscotch. Mostly oak and smoke which is nice to me not as sickly sweet as some other rums but for 30 bucks it is well worth buying.
I purchased some of the 12 year to compare to the rare blend to see what separates the two 12 year blends. This rum needed a bit of water in the glass to help open it up to really pick up on the aromas of this rum. The rum smelled of oak and citrus, with a touch of something sweet that i couldn't quite make out. In the mouth this rum stings the pallet, in comparison to the rare blend, following with a strong cane sugar flavor finishing back of with a slap in the face bit that was. I am a huge fan of Jamaican rums and the rums that Appleton Estate produce is no exception, but this was just not their best work. I would strongly suggest spending the extra 2-3 bucks and get the rare blend or save the extra 5 bucks and get their reserve. I just don't see this rum worth the money in comparison to the other Appleton Estate rums.
I'm not much of a sipper, I enjoy most rums with coke and sparkling water.
This is one of my favorites with coke, due to its strong taste it still stands out.
Enfin un rhum appleton qui goute pas le fond de canne.
My favorite mixer when it comes to Jamaican rum. Makes for a pretty damn good sipper as well. Perfect in a top shelf Mai Tai. Perfect in nearly anything that calls for a funky style of rum. I'm hard pressed to find something this doesn't mix in. Master Blender Joy Spence is nothing short of brilliant.I can't recommend this rum enough. Great stuff and extremely well priced.

The rum offers a lot of smoky spiced oak flavour.
"A nice note of cocoa and a little hint of vanilla. The rum is smooth yet spicy offering a nice kick. The finish is long and complex leaving a lot of flavour behind to savour."
