Bacardi Superior Rum is the original Bacardi rum, dating back to 1862 when Don Facundo Bacardi Massó purchased his first rum distillery in Cuba. 150 years later, Bacardi Superior is now manufactured in Puerto Rico, but the recipe remains largely the same.
A unique strain of yeast discovered in the Cuban sugarcane fields is used to produce Bacardi Superior rum. The rum is filtered through charcoal, a process pioneered by Bacardi, before and after it is aged in oak barrels for at least one year.

Good for a cheap white rum. Good value for what you are getting.
It's clean, with barely flavor but no off notes. It has undertones of baking spices and a light alcohol burn. It is great as an infuser for flavors or in cocktails asking for non flavorful spirits. It is a definer of its category and does it's job cheap and well.
After the other version called "Carta Blanca" was the Light Bacardi i reviewed based on several bottles sipped. i found a bottle of the "Superior", while i didn't directly compare them to each other, which i know i should have done. but perhaps in the future i will and update.
The Nose is distinctively a Light Bacardi with hints of Vanilla and Coconut sun screen oil, light alcoholic fumes, generally pleasant and inviting. not much different than the Carta Blanca.
Tongue: Sweet biting young alcohol very linear vanilla sweetened vodka like complexity, the alcoholic burn is harsher in this bottle than in the Carta Blanca 1 Litre bottles i had plenty of, there is sugar, not sugar cane, but added sugar which is noticeable, this together with the rather young alcohol don't mix to well and create that burning bite. the balance in the Superior is different than in the Carta Blanca, both have added sugar, but this one has more, also on the back of the bottle the caloric value is too high for a pure 40% abv distillate, 265 kcal. which means only one thing. significant amount of sugar was added to the final product. i would guess that around 12-18 grams of sugar per 100ml which is actually very high and would have an impact on diabetic drinkers. it is higher than some famous sweet liquors per same volume. remember that sugar is cheaper than alcohol, it is clear and mixes "superbly" if there is 150 grams of sugar per every 1000ml of Bacardi Superior White Rum and the ABV is still 40% it means that only 850ml of distillate (which costs more than sugar) is used while the rest is added sugar. this also means that the original distillate is definitely a higher abv which then is diluted also by the sugar. this can explain that extra alcoholic bite mostly during the swallowing and short finish.
as long as it is held on the tongue and in the mouth it can be sweet and pleasant.
Finish: Short, Alcoholic burn, but even that is short.
it is a professionally balanced rum, mostly aimed to the mixing and blending market, so nuances found during sipping are less important and neglected, the added sugar makes it perform sweeter in cocktails, making them less alcoholic actually and milder. while the higher base abv can only be sensed by those who can feel the added sugar while sipping.
this is very different to the palate of those who enjoy rum agricole or cachaca where added sugar is not allowed, and in the absence of that sugar other significant flavours are discovered. in short words the sugar here flattens and basically kills the sipping experience. in the end, it goes down like some kind of vanilla and coco flavoured vodka.
as for Carta Blanca, my impression is that it was milder and gentler and a more pleasant sipping however also the added sugar was noticeable, overall it was smoother. no doubt that these are pro blended mass market and mass consumer targeted Rums, white rums by which the competition is judged. i can not write that it is bad, and i can see that in non expert blind tasting the heavy sugar addition might effect the judgement of testers. sadly human taste buds have evolutionary bias for preference of sugar. we love sugar, we love sugar hidden in products. we even love sugar hidden in beef and milk. this is the secret to it's success. superior or not.
i rate it 50/100 since it is a world class quality product, it's drinkable straight. and is a legend as mixed. i rate Carta Blanca higher at around 70/100, but the next bottle might be judged by the sugar contents.
Gets the job done if your trying to fuel a backyard bbq, but it’s safe to say no one is sipping this. Could be a lot better, could be much worse.
Best when used it in strawberry daiquiris. Clean taste.
This rum goes very well in cocktails. I wouldn't drink rum alone. It is very sweet and sharp.

Nothing wrong with this rum and was my "go to" along with Lambs. And then I discovered rum ratings and found there were better rums and better values with this experience. Enjoy the journey!
